We will review individual low-dose herbs and safety\, formulation techniques\, different herbal preparations (internal and external)\, and clinical case studies utilizing these herbal medicines with the intention of treating specific conditions. Low-dose herbs discussed will include (but not limited to) the following: aconite\, corydalis\, belladonna\, datura\, henbane\, yohimbe\, gelsemium\, hellebore\, and cannabis. \nClass 1: Low Dose Herbs: An Overview\nIntroduction to low-dose herbs in the context of herbalism as a whole. We will discuss the concept of therapeutic window and how it pertains to herbs\, and when low-dose herbs have been considered as therapy in practice. Basic overview of herbal formulation both topically and internally\, as well as a survey of low-dose herbs we will consider during this intensive. Case examples will be presented at the end of class and Q&A. \nClass 2: Nightshades: Belladonna\, Datura\, Henbane\nProperties of nightshade plants discussed during day 2\, emphasis on side effects and safety profile. Belladonna\, henbane\, and datura will be reviewed including individual properties and how they are all related. Plant chemistry reviewed as well. Case examples involving use of nightshades in formulation will be discussed. \nClass 3: Aconite and Corydalis as Antineuropathics\nAconite and corydalis reviewed as antineuropathic herbs. Tradition\, individual herbal properties\, and safety profiles discussed. Formulation in my practice using both internal and topical antineuropathic herbs reviewed. Case examples presented and Q&A. \nClass 4: Gelsemium\, Cannabis\, and Sedative Hypnotics\nGelsemium and cannabis mainly discussed as low-dose herbs. Relationship between herbal actions used when treating anxiety\, sleep\, and other mental health conditions reviewed. Formulation using these herbs and other sedative hypnotics demonstrated. Case examples presented during day 4\, as well as general Q&A about today and the intensive generally. \nTeacher Bio: Duncan Lynch\, ND\, RH(AHG)\, is a naturopathic physician. He completed his naturopathic degree at Bastyr University in 2021 and his residency at the AIMS Institute in 2023. Dr. Lynch employs a variety of potent herbal preparations in an evidence-based approach\, with a goal of developing reliable methods for clinically applicable botanicals both topically and internally.
