SUMMARY:Herbalists as Health Advocates with Benjamin Zappin\, LAc and Ingrid Bauer\, MD
DESCRIPTION:❤ Pay from the heart pricing available; See below event description. \n\n$17 – Choose this option if you need to.\n$37 – Choose this option if you can. \n$57 – Pay it forward if you are able.\n\nHerbalists as Health Advocates with Benjamin Zappin\, LAc and Ingrid Bauer\, MD \n📆 Wednesday\, April 22\, 2026\n⏱️ 6:00pm – 7:30pm ET / 3:00pm – 4:30pm PT \nIn this focus session with Five Flavors Herbs founders Benjamin Zappin\, LAc and Ingrid Bauer\, MD\, we will discuss the important role of herbalists as health advocates. In addition to the many natural tools we can offer family\, friends and clients with herbs\, diet & supplements\, herbalists can play an important role in integrative healthcare teams. In addition to minimizing the need for some medications and ameliorating side-effects from necessary drugs\, herbalists can help individuals navigate their healthcare experience. This requires developing a broad knowledge base about health and illness\, recognizing red flags that require referral to a higher level of care\, careful charting (in clinical practice)\, and practicing interprofessional communication. We will share examples and invite dialogue about how to navigate between alternative and conventional healthcare approaches. \nTeacher Bios: \nDr Ingrid Bauer MD\, MS has been studying\, teaching\, and practicing medicine and nutrition for nearly 20 years. She completed her MS and MD through the UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program\, and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Highland Hospital in Oakland\, CA.  She currently works as a hospitalist in a rural community hospital. She is also co-founder of Five Flavors Herbs in Nevada County\, CA. Dr Bauer is also an avid cook\, yoga practitioner\, gardener\, and Spanish language enthusiast. \nBenjamin Zappin\, LAc co-founded Five Flavors Herbs to provide his community with exceptional herbal formulas supported by his years of clinical experience. Along with his unwavering dedication to crafting high-quality herbal extracts\, Benjamin is acclaimed for his work as an herbalist\, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner\, and licensed acupuncturist. Benjamin offers integrative herbal consultations through Paeonia Integrative Medicine. In his free time\, you’ll find Benjamin mountain biking or skiing\, cooking\, and studying music. \n❤ Pay from the heart pricing available; See below event description. \n\n$17 – Choose this option if you need to.\n$37 – Choose this option if you can. \n$57 – Pay it forward if you are able.

SUMMARY:Herb-Drug Interactions: An Integrative Approach with Benjamin Zappin\, LAc and Ingrid Bauer\, MD
DESCRIPTION:Herb-Drug Interactions: An Integrative Approach with Benjamin Zappin\, LAc and Ingrid Bauer\, MD \n  \n📆 Monday\, September 14\, 21\, 28\, & October 5\n⏱️ 6:00pm – 8:00pm ET / 3:00pm – 5:00pm PT \n  \nAbout this Series \nA Four-Part Series (4 x 2 hour classes\, 90 min plus 30 q&a each class) \nIn this series\, Ben & Ingrid will share from their years of experience in clinical practice navigating the intersection between herbs and pharmaceuticals\, and their years of teaching about this topic. Rather than trying to cover every possible topic\, after the first week of laying a solid foundation\, they will delve into their three favorite areas of health expertise: cardiovascular health\, pain & inflammation\, and mental health. \n  \nThis series will be geared toward advanced students and practicing herbalists and will primarily review Western herbs\, but will also include some information about TCM. We will ground our teaching in cases and offer suggested treatment protocols while promoting “flexible” herbalism. We will take a “both/and” rather than an “either/or” approach to integrative medicine\, and will highlight “red flags” that merit referral to a higher level of care. \n  \nPart 1: Introduction to Pharmacology & Herb-Drug interactions \n\nFoundations of pharmacology including pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics\nHow to read scholarly articles and interpret information about herb-drug interactions\nPotentially beneficial and/or harmful herb-drug interactions\nInterprofessional communication about herbs & drugs\n\n  \nPart 2: Cardiovascular Health \n\nBlood pressure\nLipids\nCardiac conditions: CHF and arrhythmias\n\n  \nPart 3: Pain and Inflammation \n\nMusculoskeletal conditions\nInflammatory conditions\nSmooth muscle and visceral pain\n\n  \nPart 4: Mental Health \n\nDepression & Anxiety\nExtreme states of consciousness
