When a group of herbalists founded the American Herbalists Guild (AHG) in 1989, their mission was to promote comprehensive herbal education and establish standards for competency in the clinical practice of herbalism across diverse traditions.
This led to the creation of the Registered Herbalist, RH(AHG), credential for members who met established criteria and completed a rigorous peer-review application process.
Registered Herbalist membership requires clinical practitioners to meet our Core Competencies, which establish clinical guidelines for the safe and effective use of herbal therapies; meet or exceed the Registered Herbalist Application Criteria: adhere to the Guild’s Registered Herbalist Code of Ethics; commit to ongoing professional education; use sustainably sourced herbs; and promote herbalism as a trusted source of healthcare for their communities.
This mission continues today, though the process of becoming a Registered Herbalist has changed as AHG adapts to shifts in the world of herbal practice.
We recognize that there are many skilled herbalists worldwide, and that Registered Herbalist membership is just one of many ways herbalists demonstrate their clinical skills and competency. For those who welcome peer review as confirmation of their clinical skills, the Registered Herbalist designation signifies a recognized level of expertise and commitment to herbalism.
AHG supports herbalists interested in Registered Herbalist membership through its educational offerings, annual symposium, mentorship program, and by nurturing the vitality of the herbal community.
