announce an open position for a dedicated and experienced Editor for its esteemed semi-
annual publication, the Journal of the American Herbalists Guild. This is a unique opportunity to
shape the future of herbalism by guiding the journal’s editorial vision and ensuring the highest
standards of content.
Job Description: Journal Editor
Overview: The Editor will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Journal’s publication,
ensuring content of the highest quality that aligns with AHG’s strategic vision. This role involves
collaboration with AHG leadership, active solicitation of manuscripts, and coordination of the
entire editorial process from submission to publication.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Direction:
Collaborate with AHG leadership to define the journal’s editorial strategy.
Provide leadership to achieve strategic goals.
Content Solicitation:
Actively seek out manuscripts for publication.
Partner with the Council and Executive Director to solicit sponsorships and marketing.
Editorial Review Board:
Work with the AHG Council to recruit and select reviewers.
Maintain regular communication with the Editorial Review Board.
Convene an annual meeting to discuss review policies, procedures, and publication
direction.
Manuscript Management:
Conduct initial screenings of manuscripts.
Forward selected manuscripts to reviewers.
Collaborate with authors on revisions to enhance clarity, idea development, scholarly
accuracy, and overall quality.
Return rejected manuscripts with constructive feedback.
Editorial Leadership:
Write a thoughtful editorial for each issue.
Provide monthly updates to AHG leadership on the journal’s status.
Production Coordination:
Ensure the timely production of two issues per year.
Develop and maintain a regular production schedule.
Promotion and Development:
Work with AHG leadership and office staff to promote the journal.
Participate in activities such as sponsorships, exchanges, and advertising.
Develop materials like style guidelines and solicitation requests.
Liaison and Communication:
Serve as the primary liaison with authors.
Prepare a debriefing report after each publication, outlining the completed issue and
plans for future editions.
Additional Responsibilities:
Provide advice on the marketing of the journal.
Qualifications:
Proven experience in editorial roles, preferably within academic or professional journals.
Strong leadership and communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Familiarity with the field of herbalism is a plus.
