Appalachian Center for Natural Health

The Appalachian Center for Natural Health offers three certificate programs of instruction: Family Herbalist Program (FHP), Community Herbalist Program (CHP) and the Herbal Practitioner Program (HPP). Together all three form the Practitioner Program at ACNH.

The Family Herbalist Program is a nine month foundation program with an emphasis on learning your herbs and your body. It includes herbs for specific body systems, the functional physiology of the primary body systems, and home remedies based on both folk remedies and science.

In the Community Herbalist Program, you’ll build on the information learned in the Family Herbalist Program. In CHP, we move into a deeper understanding of how the body works by looking at the functioning of the endocrine system, how we make energy, methylation, epigenetics, and herbs, foods, and other aids for balance.

The student will learn about natural approaches to mental health issues, autoimmune disorders, herb/drug interactions and contraindications, chronic illnesses, and healthy aging. We’ll continue to look at the effect of nutrition on health and well-being, especially the effect of nutrition on specific disorders. Case studies abound in HPP.

Hawthorn & Honey School of Herbal Medicine

School Logo

Deeply rooted in the Pacific Northwest, Hawthorn & Honey offers seasonal apprenticeships in Tacoma, WA. Come on a journey through our local forests, beaches, and mountains as we learn the art of herbalism in nature – as it’s intended – awakening our senses and connecting with the plants.

In the apprenticeship, we break the foundations of herbalism down piece by piece, through guided seasonal explorations where you’ll meet the plants in person, study how the body works, and practice implementing the knowledge you're building.

Our students learn the history and medicinal uses of each plant and how to create a daily plant practice using meal preparation, meditation, journaling, and dream work. Each day our apprentices create new remedies, building their home apothecary, while also developing a personal relationship with the plants through intuitive plant communication.

Through the many years that I’ve taught this seasonal apprenticeship, I’ve found that it’s not just about learning the art of herbalism. It’s the connection with nature, the relationship with the plants, and building your community of fellow plant folks. They’re here to help you – whether it’s to heal your heart, rediscover yourself, or find your true path.

The apprenticeship is offered both in-person & online. Students have access to all online materials including recorded lessons, foraging & medicine-making videos, weekly magic/folklore offerings, plus dreamwork classes, astrology, and meditations.

Northern Appalachia School of Vitalist Herbalism & Ecology

Northern Appalachia School offers in-person and distance programming in bioregional herbalism, ethnobotany, ecology, and earth skills.

Our Mission:

There is a spark inside all of us; a vitality that inspires us to make the world better for having been in it. We can make the choice to tend to that spark and kindle a flame; to contribute to the beauty and goodness of the world, or we can let it go out. Our mission at the Northern Appalachia School is to tend that fire inside others and help transform and return our local ecosystems and its inhabitants to a state of vitality.

The health of the land and the health of its people are intimately intertwined; you cannot have one without the other. The premise of nature-deficit disorder indicates with diminishing time spent in nature, our physical and mental health is declining. How strange a time we live in, to think of nature as something other than ourselves. It is not merely connection to nature we have lost; it is connection to our true selves.

The land is our teacher, our ancestor, and our home. It is calling us back.

Sacred Garden School

School Logo

Sacred Garden School offers in-person and online classes. Our 3-year training program prepares students to see clients as professional consulting herbalists.

Foundational Herbology (Year 1)- this 9-month course offers a broad introduction to all aspects of herbalism- from medicine-making to botany to learning the elements and their correlation to the seasons and organs. For beginners or even experienced herbalists who want to connect more deeply with the plants and weave threads of wisdom into a holistic understanding of Nature.

Clinical Herbology (Year 2)- this year is a bit more rigorous. We explore the body systems, pathophysiology and our materia medica more deeply. We get into the art of intake, herb/drug interactions, phytochemistry and begin to practice our assessment skills. This program is only available to people who have completed Foundational Herbology or an equivalent program.

Practical Herbology (Year 3)- this is the year that we integrate everything that we have learned through real life practice. We primarily spend our time seeing clients- both as a group and individually. We refine our assessment skills, the art of formulating, and build towards the requirements for professional membership with the AHG.

In addition to the clinical training program, we also offer shorter workshops & retreats. Check out our website for more info!

Sacred Journey School of Herbalism

An herbalist is someone who lives at the edge between the world of people and the world of the plants. We are stewards of the medicinal plants, of the natural world, and of the Earth herself. Herbalists connect people with plants so that they may partner with them on a healing journey. Herbalists also train others who wish to learn this sacred craft. It is our sacred joy and honor to do the work we do. The path of the herbalist is, ultimately, a sacred journey.

Sacred Journey School of Herbalism reflects Ginger Webb’s deep love for the plants and for humanity; her study with the late great herbalist Michael Moore; her years of experience making plant-based medicines; her explorations of east Indian philosophies including Ayurveda, and the chakra system; her geeky passion for botany, wild plants, and plant families; her reverence for the wisdom of the ancients; and her belief that we all have access to the healing wisdom of the plant world simply by virtue of the fact that we are alive and share consciousness with all life.

In addition to the programs and classes taught by Ginger Webb, we offer classes throughout the year taught by guest teachers. To stay in the loop about new upcoming classes, please subscribe to our email newsletter at gingerwebb.com. We offer both in person and online learning courses.

Terra Sylva School of Botanical Medicine

Terra Sylva exists to meet the growing need for environmentally and socially conscious herbalists able to support their communities as healers, educators, and emissaries of the plants. Our Community Herbalism programs provide training in Western herbal medicine from a holistic and Vitalist perspective. We emphasize the foundational elements of Western herbalism: the flavors of herbs, influences and actions of plants on the body—what we can notice directly with our senses. We employ a traditional Vitalist approach to healing. Vitalism respects the intrinsic wisdom of the human body and seeks to recognize and support the healing force that exists within us all, using herbs, food, and lifestyle changes as fundamental therapies. These time-honored skills and methods are deepened by in-depth lessons in modern botany, plant chemistry, human anatomy and physiology, and the study of disease. At the same time, our program emphasizes immersion in nature and experiential learning. Whether in-person or online, we include practical embodied exercises that train our attention on the plants and on our bodies. We also cover the many techniques for making plant medicine, from the intuitive art of the elixir to quick and effective tincture percolations. We believe that attending to wellness implies recognizing the impact of structural oppression on the health of individuals and communities. Anti-oppressive practice and education is foundational to our school’s curriculum.

The Hermit’s Grove Master Herbalist Program

The Hermit’s Grove Master Herbalist Program was developed and founded by Paul Beyerl whose work as an herbal author and educator is well known and respected. The course is in-depth with no two students moving at the same pace. As a consequence, it is ideal for the correspondent student but does require self-motivation. We are a non-profit educational program. Our staff donates 100% of our labor and time as our gift to the serious student who is committed to a quality herbal education. There are 100 Units, a pay-as-you-go program, so that the student can afford books, herbs, equipment and time. We cover phytochemistry, anatomy and physiology in ten courses; more than 100 infectious diseases and other conditions, history, ethics and more. To date more than 50% of those who complete the program are RNs. Our goal is to bring the most education for the least student expense. The program is $35.00 per unit with some reduced options available. Our introductory packet is $5.00 which includes the most current description of the program (in detail), an application form and a complete catalog. We have a wonderful 11-acre site in the Mississippi River Valley area of southeastern Minnesota which houses our Retreat Center as well as our educational and administrative offices. Being centrally located will allow us to be more available to all students. The new library space has all of the 4500 books housed in the same building. It is bright, comfortable, and ideal for research and study.

The Austere Medicine Program culminates in the Herbal and Off-Grid Medicine Experience (HOME) which is a 13-day, on-site, scenario-based intensive that allows students to work with both field clinical herbalism and orthodox medicine techniques in a post-disaster environment. The Clinical Herbalism Program provides online clinical education and on-site clinical internship that surpasses the requirements to apply for AHG registration. Subjects include botanical functional medicine and nutrition (taught by Dr. Kyla Helm, MD and Sam Coffman), pathophysiology of all major body systems from the standpoint of herbalism, case management, formulating, intake, botany and phytochemistry, clinic setup and business management, tele-medicine and on-site clinical (and apothecary) internships and Spanish for herba...

Wildwood Institute, LLC

At Wildwood Institute, we teach from the Four Directions of Information: Herbal Traditions, Science, Personal Experience, and Intuition; with Nature at the center.

We have been Bringing the Plants to the People and the People to the Earth™ since 1996! Come study with us in our beautiful rural Wisconsin woodland, garden, and prairie! We appreciate and value the aspect of learning herbalism within community, so we meet in person for classes one weekend per month. We also offer shorter online classes. Located just outside of Madison, WI, we offer one, two and three year Herbalist Apprenticeship Programs. Students spend the first year learning how to identify, make and use herbal medicines, create their materia medica and build an herbal apothecary for themselves. Others continue on for a deeper education, and exceptional students complete the Clinical program. More than half of our students each year travel two hours or more for the program, from Illinois, Iowa, Upper Wisconsin, Minnesota and Indiana.

For those of you interested in practicing as a Clinical Herbalist, we offer the only comprehensive, collegiate level in-person Clinical Herbalist program in the Upper Midwest, with options for clinical supervision in person and online. An accelerated program, combining the second and third year in one, is available for those who qualify.
